this week in my studio…
i finished up this block for a custom order. it is to be a gift for a special family. the family lost their 8 month old baby boy. i included his initials in the background, along with a verse his family has held onto during this time.
this week i remembered my love for pencil colors. i loved using them when i was younger. i found this wonderful set of stabilo pencils at a garage sale. i didn't really know how awesome they were at the time. i opened up the tin box and they were barely used. $8. they came home with me.
i was working on a valentine card (post below if you want to make one) and got out the tin box to use the colors. oh my goodness. they are delicious. smooth like chalk. rich wonderful colors. i felt like a kid again! :)
looking forward to seeing what you have been creating this week.

that first picture (the block) just does something to my heart. wow. what a wonderful gift.
Well, that custom order almost brought me to tears! I cannot imagine losing a child and believe only God could bring you through.
Love your colored pencils! I have children that are very much into art. Just this past weekend, while DD was at a sleepover and I was home alone with DS, I joined him in using the colored pencils! He had brought a step by step home from school on how to draw a peacock! So we sat together and drew our peacock's and then colored them in…it was fun and it reminded me how much I always loved art in school. They definitely have that gene passed down from my mother's side of the family…so much talent!
God bless your day! =)
What a beautiful and thoughtful gift! Amazing job Jen!
Sometime it feels so good to get back to basics, huh. The $8 price tag is a bonus! I love the scripture in your artwork. I'm gonna live in that all weekend:)
xo peace
I love the power of words on art- I will cherish this verse. Love what you made, and really love the "retro" pencils!
What a find!!
wow-what a powerful commissioned piece…it's beautiful and i love that you added his initials…my heart is aching for them and their loss . love garage sales too…soooo much. so many treasures. and i often think of what i may miss if i don't go…what a find.
I love the commissioned piece … so personal and beautiful. I can't not imagine what it is like to lose a child (and pray that I never will) … I'm sure that the family will find great comfort in this piece.
The custom piece is beautiful. A very sweet message. I love your description of the pencils–"delicious!" Yes, I definitely know what you mean! Sometimes I love just smearing pastels and certain paints over paper just to stare at the colors and the way in which they cling to the paper!
I can't even fathom doing a project like that…what a gift to use your gift for others to give grace and comfort…a memorial.
That is one of my favorite verses…love Joshua…nice to meet you
xo
thanks for the colorN pencil inspiration, I may just have to get mine back out!
How beautiful is this verse for a special family. I can't imagine losing a child. What a lovely memorium.
Colored pencils are my favorites–I am a watercolorist, but not a "purist." I just don't feel like a painting is complete until I have added a little (or a lot) of colored pencil. I love the rough texture of colored pencil on watercolor paper. It reminds me of the joy and abandon of a child's scribbles with crayon!
Your work is beautiful and encouraging. I'm glad I found your blog!
Such an appropriate piece – and thanks for stopping by on Monday – I will be looking for you on Valentine's day! I was busy this week doing sewn valentines for our homeschool coop party that took place on Friday – so I just totally missed participating with you this week! I, too, absolutely stalk garage sales for canvases, brushes, etc…I have got to find some professional type colored pencils now!
Blessings!
